(The official mix CD. Summer 2006.)
There’s nothing particularly special about this summer, but since I’m part of the autistic antisocial horde perennially hooked up to their music players, I’m not sure I could do most of my activities of daily living (haha, like fuck) without any music on.
A bit of an explanation, in case you’re interested. (God, I seem to be turning into the kind of prude who issues disclaimers on every occasion. Even that admission is itself a disclaimer. Even my admission that the admission is a disclaimer is a disclaimer. U.s.w.) The choices may strike you as deliberately, snootily obscure. I know I tend to be like that in person—hell, I’m totally like that in person—but this is really the stuff I’ve been listening to lately.
Most of the tracks possess varying degrees of good-natured tackiness (the official word for that, I suppose, is ‘quirkiness’)—note for instance the presence of three Stereolab songs. Cake’s version of ‘Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps’ is so dorky it’s great. Although I think it’s a particularly dumb R.E.M. song, ‘Stand’ has always been fun to bounce along to—it’s dance music for nerds. Belle & Sebastian’s ‘Sesame Street’-sounding music you either find charming or annoying. And All Saints don’t exactly figure in hipsters’ play lists. (They’re not Sufjan Stevens or the Kronos Quartet, sure, but whatever. I like ‘Pure Shores.’) But I'm still missing one song—‘Goodnight Moon,’which I'm including because I love the ‘Kill Bill’ movies.
Anyway, if you’re interested in having a copy of the songs listed below, throw a blank CD or a flash disk in my direction.
1. ‘Lo Boob Oscillator,’ Stereolab.
2. ‘Vida de Otario,’ ‘City Of God’ OST.
3. ‘No vino, estaba enferma o de vacaciones,’ Le Mans.
4. ‘Vodiak,’ Stereolab.
5. ‘Asleep On A Sunbeam,’ Belle & Sebastian.
6. ‘Tropicando,’ Thievery Corporation.
7. ‘Stand,’ R.E.M.
8. ‘Un rayo de sol,’ Le Mans.
9. ‘Pure Shores,’ All Saints.
10. ‘Excursions Into “Oh, A-Oh,” ’ Stereolab.
11. ‘Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps.’ Cake.
12. ‘Ocean City Girl,’ Ivy.
13. ‘Goodnight Moon.’ Shivaree.
14. ‘Batucada,’ DJ Camilo Roche and DJ Rah remix.
11 ang humirit:
wow, beach music. just add a warm beer and you're ready to go. i'm a loser tonite, staying in my room resizing photos to email home while my buddy S has been invited by russian guy E to meet up with some "russian ho's". S's words, not mine. he did say the term is redundant. tsk, sama ng ugali ng batang yun. i've been here 10 days and i haven't had any shoju yet. sheesh. i think i hang out with the wrong people.
sigh...i want to comment, but polymath paul doesn't make it easy for me to do so. feel stupes just by scanning the list of, er, distinguished-sounding songs (yeah, even the remix). i mean, paano na lang ang mga all-time pronoun songs ko na 'you' at 'she'?
what's a polymath?
anyway the fews songs i know here actually sound very pop. i don't remember which one is vida de otario because i lost my tracklist & i just pretend the whole 'city of god' album is just one song that's slow in some parts & disco in others.
sino si shivaree? parang pngalan ng mexican bellydancer na lalaki.
yay, janet. ye have a blog!!! congrats. much of the songs i chose are really tacky/poppy stuff, believe me. they just happen to have pretentious titles. ;)
shivaree: no clue who shivaree is/are, but the 'belly dancer' comment sounds kinda creepy. i think it's a girl, judging by the sound of the track; unless it's the name of a group. the singer sounds a bit like gwen stefani.
btw: i was coming home from quezon (long story; kinda boring) yesterday and i was listening to 'nothing but the sky,' when it occurred to me that the girl sounds like someone--then i realized, in that track, she sounds like elizabeth fraser of cocteau twins/massive attack.
btw: alam ko mumurahin mo ko, but i now have a copy of 'an ocean apart'--and a number of the songs from 'before sunrise/sunset.' hehe.
polymath (noun)- a person of encyclopedic learning; my pathetic attempt to match The Polymath's use of the word "concertina" in his palanca-winning story. hah.
The Polymath (noun) - what i will call Paul from now on, esp in my blog.
shivaree (noun) - pangalan ng indian gay guy; cousin of and not to be confused with chuvalee
aye, the blog. finally gave in. heh. blog still under construction. don't even know how to put up pics or what to write. having fun, though, esp when i visit your sites. fun. la lang.
